Vitamin B3 (nicotinamide), is used in dermatology for two main reasons;
- For the reduction of skin cancers and actinic keratoses in high-risk patients (Australas J Dermatol. 2017, 58: 174-80).
- As treatment in inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema and blistering skin disorders (Australas J Dermatol. 2014, 55(3):169-75).
Vitamin B3 is a precursor for many enzymes that play an important role in the metabolism and production of energy in skin cells. Nicotinamide can improve cellular processes like repair of DNA after UV exposure and may reduce the negative effects of UV on the immune system of the skin.

Nicotinamide in skin cancer prevention
Nicotinamide supplementation in skin cancer prevention is commonly suggested by dermatologists and GP's with a special interest in skin cancer. A study published in the The New England Journal of Medicine in 2015 concluded that oral nicotinamide was safe and effective in reducing the rates of new non-melanoma skin cancers (BCC’s and SCC’s) and actinic keratoses (AKA solar keratoses) in high-risk patients. Larger studies have been suggested to be completed to further investigate the encouraging results of earlier studies.
